Sweden has an EU directive on temporary protection, which was extended by the Government of the country until at least March 2025 at the end of 2023. To obtain a residence permit with such protection in Sweden, you must apply on the website of the country’s migration service.
According to this directive, Ukrainians who are under temporary protection in Sweden have the right to:
- reside in the country (the place of residence is provided by the migration service);
- receive financial support;
- legally engage in labor.
More than 50 thousand Ukrainians have already used this right of residence in Sweden under temporary protection. They choose not only the capital of Stockholm, but also small northern towns. For example, in the city of Umeå, located just 400 kilometers from the Arctic Circle, about 200 Ukrainian refugees have already been registered.
Program to strengthen support for Ukrainians
The Swedish government has developed a special bill to facilitate the stay of Ukrainians on their territory. This bill includes the following points:
Refugees will be able to get a BankID, which will allow:
- access to electronic services;
- identification of Ukrainians in companies or institutions.
This bill also provides for improved access of Ukrainians to the Swedish healthcare system at a new, higher level of quality.
