Ukrainians who plan to return from the Czech Republic will receive financial assistance for voluntary departure. This support may include paying for pre-departure accommodation and house tickets, as well as legal advice costs.

Applications for assistance can be submitted within three months after the termination of protection, and it will apply to those who received protection after 2014. In case of obtaining a long-term visa, part of the assistance must be returned.

Conditions for newly arrived Ukrainians in the Czech Republic

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine informs Ukrainian refugees about changes in the procedure for granting short-term asylum to newcomers.

From April 1, new refugees will be able to stay only in the city of Ostrava. This service is also available in the center of Brno until the end of March.

Short-term shelters provide temporary housing for people who have recently arrived in the country in search of temporary protection. These shelters are used when the Regional Center for Assistance to Ukraine (KACPU) is closed or the needs of people in temporary shelter and humanitarian housing have not yet been resolved.

Addresses of existing short-term shelters:

  • Ostrava, Dr. Malého, 1356/17 (tel. +420 771 288 779 );
  • Brno, Hnevkovského, 30/65 (tel. +420 770 132 569 ) – until April 1.

Requests for humanitarian housing should be sent exclusively to KACPU in Ostrava at the same address. Opening hours: Monday, Wednesday from 8:00 to 16:00, Friday from 8:00 to 14:00.

Who can lose the status of temporary protection?

If a person has not extended temporary protection during online registration, it will be valid only until March 31, 2024, the agency reports.

It should be borne in mind that a new review of the grounds for granting temporary protection will be conducted, as well as when submitting the first application. Obtaining temporary protection in the past does not guarantee its re-provision, the Czech Interior Ministry warns.

It should also be remembered that getting temporary protection again does not automatically mean getting the right to state assistance, for example, state-paid medical insurance.

Extension of temporary protection until 2025

On December 22, 2023, Czech President Petr Pavel signed amendments to the Lex Ukraine law regulating the status of Ukrainian refugees in the Czech Republic. According to these changes, temporary protection in the Czech Republic for Ukrainian refugees has been extended until March 2025. This status provides access to the labor market, health insurance, and school education.

Protection continues in two stages: first you need to register electronically before March 15, 2024 to get an extension until September 30, 2024, and then physically contact the migration department to paste a new visa sticker, which will extend protection until March 31, 2025.

In 2024, a requirement is also introduced to submit a certificate of residence signed by the owner or landlord, with the exception of those living in public humanitarian housing.

Reduction of the period of stay in free humanitarian housing

The Law on support for Ukrainian Refugees in the Czech Republic provides for a reduction in the period of stay in free humanitarian housing.

From September 1, 2024 this period will be only 90 days for all, without exception. Refugees who exhaust this period will have to look for standard housing and pay for it.
