When importing a prescription drug to Poland, the Ministry of Health recommends that you have a document confirming such a need. This can be:
- a prescription from a doctor,
- a copy of the patient’s medical record,
- receipts from pharmacies,
- a certificate from a doctor with a diagnosis and treatment dates.
It is important that the document is certified and has the signatures of the attending physician and the chief physician.
In addition, when using a prescription issued in Ukraine, it should be borne in mind that in Poland the rules for the release of antibacterial drugs are more strict, and the prescription must be used within 7 days. A copy of the medical record may be required when seeking medical care in Poland.
It is also important to note that antibiotics cannot be purchased in Ukraine without an electronic prescription valid for 30 days.
In what quantity is it recommended to export the medicine?
According to Polish law, it is possible to import medicines for your own needs in an amount not exceeding the five smallest packages. The same restriction exists in Ukraine, which serves as a guarantee that medicines are intended for personal use and not for sale.
These rules apply to medicines in any aggregate state – solid, soft, liquid or gaseous. At the same time, it is important to take into account the safety of transportation in order to avoid damage or spilling of drugs during transportation, for example, ampoules or candles.
If you have a chronic disease that requires long-term treatment, it is important to know that it is impossible to stock up on medicine for several years ahead due to the limited shelf life of the drugs. Patients should be under constant medical supervision, both in Ukraine and Poland.
If permits and a written declaration of medicines are required, from 6 to 10 packages of one drug can be exported from Ukraine to Poland. It is important to comply with these restrictions, as an attempt to smuggle a large amount of medicines may arouse the suspicion of border guards.
The export rules apply to all medicines, except those containing narcotic, psychotropic substances or precursors of category 1.
How do I transport prohibited medicines?
For the import of prohibited medicines into Poland, medical documentation confirming the purpose of such treatment is required. This may include an extract from the medical history, an outpatient card and a special prescription No. 3, which is written on one form for one drug.
Even if medical documentation is available, it is necessary to obtain a certificate from the Chief Pharmaceutical Inspector of Poland before entering. A permit for the import of drugs with narcotic, psychotropic substances or precursors of category 1 is issued 15 days before crossing the border and is valid for up to 30 days.
Neglecting these requirements can lead to legal consequences. It is also important to keep in mind that some medications may contain prohibited substances, so consultation with a doctor or pharmacist before taking any medications is mandatory.
What medicine is not recommended to bring from Ukraine?
It is not recommended to import over-the-counter medicines from Ukraine, such as painkillers and antipyretics, nausea and digestive problems, anti-allergenic drugs, cough syrups, vitamins, herbal medicines and dietary supplements. These products are available in Polish pharmacies, cosmetics stores and grocery stores.
For medical supplies such as cotton wool, patches, thermometers, diagnostic tests, hearing aids, reeds, contact lenses, glasses, compression knitwear and diapers, you can contact pharmacies and specialty stores in Poland. These goods are sold freely, and prices are about the same as in Ukraine, and sometimes may be slightly lower.
